Audi S8 V10 5.2L FSI 40V (D3)
AUDI (D3) 2006-2010 ENGINE CODES – BSM
STOCK POWER – 450PS STOCK TORQUE – 540NM
The S8 was fitted with a V10 engine developed on adapting the Lamborghini Gallardo's 5.0L V10 for the performance-focused Audi S8 (D3), creating a larger 5.2L FSI engine with direct injection for better torque, efficiency, and everyday usability, resulting in 450 PS for the S8 and later evolving into the R8's 5.2L V10
Maintenance & Ownership Considerations:
- Carbon Buildup: A major concern for this FSI direct-injection engine, requiring regular carbon cleaning for optimal performance.
- Coil Packs & Plugs: Worn coil packs and spark plugs are common causes of misfires and performance issues.
- Heavy & Complex: The car is heavy, and some components, like lambda sensors, can be expensive to replace (often an engine-out job).
- Common Issues: Known problems include warped valve covers, air suspension, and seizing control arm pinch bolts.
STAGE 2 PACKAGE DETAILS
Like all modern Audi FSI engines – fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber rather than the intake port, the intake valves are never washed with detergent-filled fuel, allowing oil vapor from the PCV system to bake onto them over time.
Carbon cleaning on Audi FSI (Fuel Stratified Injection) engines is a necessary maintenance procedure to remove heavy carbon deposits that accumulate on the intake valves – we regularly see these and 4.2L V8 engines in the RS4 down on power and now R8 5.2L v10 struggling to perform due to this buildup.
Symptoms of Carbon buildup:
- Loss of power and sluggish acceleration
- Rough or lumpy idle
- Cold start misfires and check engine lights
- Reduced fuel economy
Stage 2 – We recommend doing a carbon clean to get the car back to stock power and then we can tune the ECU and TCU with our custom Stage 2 software.
Here’s a breakdown of what the MRC Stage 2 Package for the Audi S8 5.2L V10 FSI includes:
- In-house developed MRC ECU Stage 2 Remap
The most common part of Stage 1 tuning is adjusting the car’s Engine Control Unit (ECU), which governs the performance parameter settings like air-fuel mixture, ignition timing, and boost levels. This Stage 2 remap is the culmination of months of dedicated work by our highly skilled engineers at MRC Tuning working on a bespoke tune that will optimize these settings to increase power output, torque, and fuel efficiency without requiring any mechanical changes.
- Gearbox Tune
Tuning a Transmission Control Unit (TCU) refers to modifying the software that controls the automatic transmission in a vehicle. The TCU is responsible for shifting gears, controlling torque delivery, and optimizing the performance of the transmission. Just like with engine tuning (ECU), TCU tuning can enhance driving dynamics, performance, and efficiency.
- Upgraded Air filter
Upgrading to a high-flow air filter or a performance intake system helps the engine get more air, leading to better combustion and more power.
A better intake allows the engine to breathe more freely, improving throttle response and overall performance.
- Carbon cleaning the intake manifold and inspection of changeover flaps
We use a combination of walnut blasting and specially developed in-house techniques to remove the carbon buildup.
The changeover flaps work like this: In the lower RPM range, a long intake manifold path is opened in order to increase torque. In the upper RPM range, a short intake manifold path is opened, this short position produces an increase in engine power output. These flaps are known to break and can fall into the engine, repair kits can be sourced. However parts are very hard to come by for this platform now and intake manifolds are very rare in a good condition.

Bookings
We require non refundable deposits for all bookings made, if you’re more than half an hour late, try to rearrange within 48 hours or do not show we will keep the deposit, if you are wanting to re book then another deposit will need to be taken.
We also ask that all invoices are paid by BACS before collection.
Engine related FAQ
All tuned Vehicles should be ran on Audi long-life 5W40 oil.
All 2.0L 2.5L and 4L engines should be ran on NGK race plugs once tuned.
Please let us know if service work needs to be added to your estimate
Service Intervals:
- Oil and filter change once a year or every 10k
- Major engine service every 2 years or every 20k
- Transmission (gearbox, haldex, diffs, transfer box) should be done every 3-4 years, every 35k
- Depending on how the car is driven, if the car is driven hard/ abused etc then these intervals should be cut in half.
Fuel
Please make sure your car arrives with at least half a tank of fuel and is always run on the best fuel, either Tesco 99 Momentum or Shell Vpower
Coilpacks
Please be aware that old coilpacks can fail when running more power, causing a misfire, please make sure you have newest revision coilpacks before booking in, or let us know and we can add these to the estimate and replace on the day.
